The challenge
Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park set out to upgrade its gym facilities to better support a wide demographic—from committed gym-goers to older adults and rehabilitation users. While the centre already offered a strong fitness programme, the team wanted to:
- Improve accessibility for older users and those new to strength training
- Introduce modern functional and HIIT options
- Refresh and reconfigure the free weights zone to offer more flexibility and impact
This required a multi-zone solution that could meet the needs of every user group while enhancing the overall member experience.
The solution
We worked closely with Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park to deliver a full gym upgrade, anchored around three key areas:
1. Hydraulic strength zone for older adults
To better serve older users and those returning to fitness, we installed a bespoke hydraulic circuit using Gym Gear’s user-friendly hydraulic strength machines. These low-impact, self-regulating machines offer a smooth, joint-safe training option, encouraging participation from members who might otherwise avoid traditional resistance equipment.
Key kit included:
- Chest press / row combo
- Leg extension / curl combo
- Shoulder press / lat pull
- Hip abduction / adduction
- Core trainer
- Seated stepper
2. Cardio and HIIT upgrade
To support high-intensity interval training and varied cardiovascular workouts, we installed the Ski Max 2.0. This versatile machine enhances the gym’s offering for functional fitness fans and class-based training.
3. Redesigned free weights zone
The free weight area has undergone a full revamp, now featuring:
- Modular rigs for functional training
- Sterling Series plate-loaded strength machines
- Premium Urethane Dumbbells for durability and performance
This setup allows members to move seamlessly between compound lifts and isolated exercises, with versatile layouts to suit small group training, solo sessions, or PT guidance.
The result
The upgraded gym now offers something for everyone—from older users building foundational strength, to performance-focused members chasing PBs. As a result, Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park now boasts one of the most inclusive and dynamic training spaces in the region.
- Increased engagement from older and low-mobility members
- Enhanced experience for functional and strength training enthusiasts
- A more versatile, welcoming layout for all ability levels
