These are not arguments against secure or separated storage. They demonstrate that storage decisions involve competing priorities. Security, access, space efficiency and visibility must be assessed together. Where one priority dominates without considering session behaviour, the resulting arrangement may solve an organisational problem while creating a supervision weakness.
Visual barriers increase the interruption
The route to storage should be assessed from the normal staff viewing position, not only from a plan drawing. A route that appears direct on paper may cross behind equipment frames, door leaves or changes in wall alignment. These features can create temporary blind areas even when the overall room has good visibility.
The position of the staff member during retrieval also matters. Opening a low cupboard may require them to crouch and look down. Reaching into a deep cabinet may direct their attention away from the room. Entering a store may place a solid wall between them and the session. The visual effect is produced by the complete retrieval action, not merely the location of the storage opening.

Storage access problems may not be obvious during an initial walkthrough. The room can appear orderly, and the distance between the teaching area and the store may seem acceptable. Staff may gradually adapt by leaving commonly used items outside secure storage, positioning themselves closer to the store or simplifying activities to reduce retrieval.
