Broadening a gym’s training offer
"We didn't know what we needed. So Gym Gear were massively instrumental to help us draw up the plans and make sure we had the right kit."
— Zoe Edmondson, Director, Azcend Health and Fitness Club
The Challenge
For Directors Zoe and Harry Edmondson, who run the business and teach classes themselves, the club’s purpose has always been to help people become healthier and happier. Their approach brings together exercise, nutrition, mindset and relaxation, with a strong emphasis on making newcomers feel comfortable.
Developing the training offer needed to support that purpose. The club wanted to introduce HYROX training, but the team had not yet taken part in a HYROX event and were unfamiliar with what they would need. Getting those decisions right mattered for an independent business investing in a new direction.
There was also an immediate deadline. The club was preparing to host its first AZ Games, with just two weeks between funding becoming available and everything needing to be in place.
The Solution
Gym Gear worked with the team to turn their plans into practical equipment decisions, helping them establish what they needed for HYROX training and the inaugural AZ Games. This gave Zoe and Harry guidance at a point when they were developing an unfamiliar part of their offer.
Versatility was central to the value of the refurbishment. The resulting equipment provision supports different session formats, allowing the team to adapt classes for lower-impact exercise as well as more demanding training.
Gym Gear also provided hands-on support during the tight installation window. Zoe recalls Rich, one of Gym Gear’s owners, working alongside the club team at 9pm to lay flooring. That involvement helped the club prepare the space under the pressure of its approaching event.
The Result
Azcend now has greater flexibility in the classes it can deliver. Reflecting on the refurbishment three years later, the team describe a smarter, cleaner-looking studio and the ability to run a broader mix of sessions using the equipment available.
For an independent club led by directors who coach their members themselves, that flexibility has practical value. They can support people discovering exercise alongside those preparing for HYROX, within the same club.
The investment supports the ethos Zoe and Harry continue to build: a community where people of different ages, abilities and goals can train together and feel that they belong. Our return visit showed how the refurbished space continues to serve that purpose beyond the initial installation.
