The Challenge
The existing gym space had evolved over time from a series of converted rooms within an older building. Although the facility had a loyal membership base, the layout lacked flow and functionality, making it difficult to deliver the experience expected from a modern gym environment.
The building also faced practical limitations, including poor ventilation and disconnected training areas. Brio recognised that the facility needed updating in order to remain competitive against private sector gyms while continuing to support the local community that had stayed loyal throughout the redevelopment period.
The team wanted to create a gym that felt more open, welcoming, and accessible for all users - including first-time gym members and wheelchair users - while improving the variety of training options available across the site.
The Solution
Gym Gear worked with the Brio team to redesign the training environment and create a more cohesive gym floor layout.
Key elements of the refurbishment included:
Removing dividing walls to open up the gym floor
Creating three clearly defined training zones
Expanding the conditioning area
Improving visibility across the gym from the poolside viewing areas
Introducing dedicated spaces for new gym users and accessible training
Upgrading the equipment offering with modern strength and conditioning equipment
The new layout was carefully zoned to support different training styles and user confidence levels. Separate areas were created for members who may feel intimidated entering a gym environment for the first time, while still allowing them to remain connected to the wider gym community.
Accessibility was also a major focus within the design, with wheelchair-accessible spaces integrated into the facility.
The refurbished gym now includes a broader range of equipment that better reflects current fitness trends and member demand. Staff highlighted the excitement around introducing new pieces of equipment, including dedicated glute training machines and an expanded conditioning offering.
Throughout the planning stage, the Brio team worked closely with Gym Gear to visualise the finished facility using digital layouts and walkthrough presentations before installation began.
The Result
The completed refurbishment has delivered a significantly more modern and engaging gym environment for Brio Northgate and the wider Chester community.
The open-plan layout, improved zoning, and upgraded equipment have helped create a facility that appeals to a wider demographic while improving the overall member experience. The new gym environment also allows non-members and casual visitors to see the activity and atmosphere from surrounding areas of the leisure centre, helping encourage new participation.
The project has strengthened Brio’s position within the local fitness market while staying true to its community-focused ethos.
For leisure centres and community gyms looking to modernise ageing facilities, the Brio Northgate project demonstrates how thoughtful gym design, inclusive layouts, and well-planned training zones can significantly improve both member experience and long-term facility appeal.
