Kirkby Leisure Centre, operated by Volair, wanted to modernise its facilities with a full refurbishment that would engage its diverse community of users. This was the third project between Volair and Gym Gear, and the brief was clear: update the equipment, refresh the layout, and deliver a facility that rivals private gyms in both quality and appeal.

The Challenge
Volair required a complete upgrade of Kirkby Leisure Centre, covering two floors and catering for a wide range of members. The facility needed to support everyone from keen weightlifters to the active ageing population, while maximising the available space. Alongside strength and cardio equipment, the project had to include a functional training zone and premium design elements.
The Solution
Our design team worked closely with Volair to create a detailed plan using 3D visuals and walkthroughs. This guided the selection and placement of equipment across the two-floor facility. Key installations included:
Re-life Hydraulic Strength Series, the first of its kind installed at a Volair site, designed to provide bi-directional resistance for all ages and abilities.
Platinum Strength Series and Sterling Series plate-loaded machines in the main strength area.
Functional zone with a sprint track, kettlebells, slam balls, med balls, and a modular storage rack.
XT3 Multi Surface Prowler, one of the first sites to use this sled with 8 levels of resistance and a wheelbarrow function.
Cardio and HIIT zones featuring LED 98 and 97 Series cardio machines, Tornado Bikes, Blade Rowers, and StairMaster Gauntlets.
The entire 5,200 sq ft refurbishment, including delivery and installation, was completed within three days.
The Result
The refurbished Kirkby Leisure Centre now provides members with a premium gym environment, offering a comprehensive mix of cardio, resistance, free weights, and functional training. The addition of the Re-life series makes the facility more inclusive for older members, while the sled track and HIIT kit enhance performance training options.
With significant investment and top-of-the-range Gym Gear equipment, the Kirkby site now sets a new benchmark for community-focused gyms, positioning Volair as a leader in accessible and high-quality fitness provision.
