"The new gym has given us the platform to take member training and athletic performance to the next level. It’s a fantastic addition to the club."
— Northern Tennis Club
Founded nearly 140 years ago, The Northern is one of the oldest lawn tennis clubs in the UK. The club approached Gym Gear to create a high-performance strength and conditioning facility to complement its racquet programmes and provide members with broader training opportunities. The goal was to deliver a professional, multi-functional space that would establish The Northern as a centre of excellence for athletic development.

The Challenge
The Gym Manager had a clear vision for a facility focused on strength and conditioning, designed to support all levels of training. The space needed to accommodate:
Group classes for both juniors and adults
Bookable sessions for members when not in use
Personal training programmes
The key challenge was to deliver a layout that could support multiple training formats while maintaining an open, accessible, and user-friendly environment.
The Solution
Our design team developed a 3D visual of the proposed layout, enabling the club to review and refine every aspect before installation. Once approved, Gym Gear supplied and installed a complete range of equipment, carefully selected to balance versatility, durability, and performance:
Strength training: racks, benches, Olympic bars, and weight plates
Conditioning tools: sled, plyo box, battle rope, slam balls, and powerbags
Flooring: 30mm Premium Rubber Tiles in grey fleck and blue for durability and shock absorption
The equipment selection and layout were designed around Gym Gear’s four pillars of gym design philosophy - optimising the training environment, supporting member progression, fostering community and connection, and ensuring training diversity across all sessions.
The Result
The Northern Tennis Club now benefits from a purpose-built strength and conditioning facility that supports structured programming, private sessions, and general member access. The new environment enhances the club’s training offer, providing members with professional-grade equipment in a motivating and inclusive space.
