Types of Treadmill

Folding Treadmills

Perfect for those tight on space, and primarily useful for home gyms, Folding Treadmills are treadmills with a deck that can be lifted up to save space when not in use.

Fixed Treadmills

Fixed treadmills are designed for permanent placement in the home or at the gym and cannot be easily moved or stored away. They are, however, sturdier than their folding counterparts as there is no need for a folding mechanism. This type of running machine is best suited for gyms.

Desk Treadmills

A desk treadmill (or treadmill desk) are desks/workstations that are adapted so that the user walks on a treadmill while using a computer or laptop to perform office tasks. Usually, desk treadmills are more compact and provide a way to stay active while performing office tasks all day.

Commercial Treadmills

The most popular treadmill for health clubs and gyms; commercial treadmills are designed specifically to stand up to high-intensity use all day long. They are naturally more expensive, due to their increased durability and longevity.

Why use a Treadmill?

Burns Calories

Treadmills are a great way to exercise and burn calories, with a standard treadmill workout burning around 100 calories per mile.

Increases Bone Density

Cardio exercise in the form of running and jogging is often recommended for people with osteoporosis as it can lead to an increase in bone density. When performing excercises like running, the muscles that you use are constantly pulling on your bones. This movement has a direct effect on your bone density which increases the more you use your bones and muscles for exercises, which is also known as Wolfe’s law.

Increases Cardiovascular Health

While cardio workouts (like running and jogging) are usually associated with burning calories and losing weight; one of the major benefits of a treadmill and cardio workouts, in general, are that they increase cardiovascular health, such as the strength of the heart and lungs. Increasing cardiovascular health is said to have many benefits such as lowing the risk of heart disease, improving the immune system, managing weight and improving moods.

Less Impact on Joints

While running can be challenging for some people with joint pain; treadmills often reduce the impact on joints while running as treadmills cushion the impact – allowing more people to take part in running and jogging in a safer way; while reducing injury and pain.

Improves Mental Health

Running regularly at moderate or vigorous levels can improve your mental health as chemicals and hormones are released that have positive effects on the brain. These benefits can include reducing stress, improving sleep quality and elevating moods.

Considerations to Make When Buying a Treadmill

The first consideration to make is the application and use for a treadmill. Are you purchasing the treadmill for your home gym or is the purchase for a commercial gym, which will be used much more frequently?

Available space

Treadmills aren’t small, so the next consideration to make is the available space you have for the machine. If you are tight on space, a folding treadmill may be a good option as it can be easily stored away when not in use, however, these treadmills aren’t as sturdy as their fixed counterparts. If space isn’t an issue then the size of the treadmill probably won’t be, either.

Treadmill power

Treadmills are built with different-sized motors, providing different power outputs and horsepower depending on the use of the machine. Typically, treadmills designed to be used in home gyms will have smaller motors which generally brings the price down, while larger commercial treadmills will need larger, more expensive motors to deal with the constant demand and use. We recommend every treadmill has a power output of at least 1.5 continuous horsepower for home gyms and 2.5 continuous horsepower for commercial treadmills that will be used much more frequently.

Features (Speed/Incline)

Generally, treadmills have three main settings: speed, incline and resistance. Different treadmills have the ability to provide different levels of speeds, inclines and resistance. For entry-level runners, a speed anywhere between 6-8mph (~9.5-12.5km/h) is suitable, with more experienced runners typically needing a speed of at least 10mph(16km/h). In any case, consider the maximum speed of treadmills as it should be able to increase as your running experience and ability increase and improves.
