The UK is home to many wonderful things: the beautiful countryside, friendly people, exciting cities, and tasty food. But did you know that it’s also home to some brilliant – and completely kooky – fitness contests?
Around the country, there are some epic, eyebrow raising competitions that you can take part in and, in today’s blog, we’re going to be outlining 4 of our favourites. Keep reading to find out about the strange fitness contests you can actually take part in.
Cheese Rolling
Every spring in Gloucester, the annual cheese rolling contest takes place.
In short, a 9 lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled from the top of Cooper’s Hill, chased by contestants. The first person to cross the finish line wins the competition and, aside from the glory, wins the wheel of cheese.
Over the years, this contest has proven to be more dangerous than you might imagine. So the cheese has now been replaced with a foam replica and contestants are no longer allowed to try to ‘catch’ the ‘cheese’.
Bog Snorkelling
The World Bog Snorkelling Championships is held every August Bank Holiday in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales.
The aim of the game is to complete 2 lengths of a 60 yard long trench filled with water. Wearing a snorkel, wetsuit, flippers, and even fancy dress, contestants must not swim – they must only use flipper power.
The current World Champion of bog snorkelling (and World Record holder!) is Neil Rutter, who managed to complete the course in an amazing 1 minute 18.82 seconds.
People flock to this wacky event from all over the world, including Italy, Australia, Denmark, South Africa, and the USA.
Gravy Wrestling
The World Gravy Wrestling Championships is a brilliantly bizarre contest held in East Lancashire. Just like it says on the tin, this is a wrestling competition with a twist. The participants have to wrestle their opponents… in a pool of Lancashire gravy!
The contestants have 2 minutes to wrestle and, not only do they get points for the actual wrestling, points are given for fancy dress, comedic effect, and entertainment. This charity event is not to be missed.
Thumb Wrestling
“1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a thumb war,” is still sung in playgrounds across the country. But did you know that thumb wrestling exists outside of the school yard?
The World Thumb Wrestling Championships is held annually on the first weekend of August. It takes place in Beccles, Suffolk.
Contestants place their thumbs in a small, wooden ‘wrestling ring’ to take on their opponents in a classic thumb war.
Whether you attend as a spectator or take part in the event, the World Thumb Wrestling Championships is an excellent activity to see and do if you get a chance to go.
